Description
Mentha pulegium is known as Pennyroyal. It is a perennial that is part of the mint family, and it can spread and root from leaf nodes. It is perfect in the cottage garden setting with its old-fashioned charm. In mid-summer, whorls of lavender blooms form on stems held above the foliage. Pennyroyal is a 4 - 16 inch tall perennial growing in USDA zones 6 - 9. It can be invasive with its aggressive spreading habit, but it works wonderfully in baskets or containers as it cascades over the edges. Once it is well established, it is fairly drought tolerant. Sowing Rate: 6 - 7 seeds per plant. Press the seed into the soil and cover with 1/8 inch of soil. With a temperature of 68F, germination normally occurs within 21 days. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing the plants 18 - 24 inches apart. To encourage bushier growth, pinch back the plants at the time of transplanting. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Mentha pulegium is known as Pennyroyal.
