It is a great plant for attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators and is also suitable for creating long-lasting cut flowers. Planting it together with its relative, Obedient Plant (P. virginiana), in cottage or rain gardens enhances the depth of color. The plant thrives in moderately moist soil conditions. The Obedient Plant derives its name from the flowers' remarkable ability to stay in place when lightly pushed. It spreads through rhizomes and requires division every 2-3 years to manage growth. To cultivate the Showy Obedient Plant, direct sowing in early fall is ideal, pressing the seed into a well-prepared seedbed, without covering it as it requires light to germinate. Alternatively, start the seeds indoors under lights, having stratified them for 8 weeks by mixing them with moistened seed starting mix or sand and refrigerating. Once the seedlings are ready, transplant them outdoors after the last frost and water them regularly.
