HARDINESS ZONE.7-10 GROW.Sow in spring by laying seed flat on potting soil, cover with 1/4 inch of compost, tamp securely and keep evenly moist until germination, which can take several weeks. WHEN TO PLANT.Spring USE.Since antiquity, the resin of Ferula species has been used for medicinal purposes. The resin, in the form of a sticky latex, was usually extracted from the lower stalk or root, with the root resin being the finest-grade. NOTE.Culinary uses of this species are not always safe and poisoning may occur. Ferula communis is a Mediterranean native that makes a big, bodacious statement in the garden, first with its silvery-black, lacy, see-through foliage then, in the second season, the foliage extends upward to 6' tall, topped by a 3' branched, firework-like inflorescence of yellow flower balls. The 5- petalled yellow flowers will appear in the early summer. The plants may take several years to flower. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in sun. Protect with a thick dry mulch in winter. Often dies after setting seed.
