Description
Aubrieta Hybrida Hendersonii grows as a perennial in USDA Zones: 4 - 9 and thrives in full sun to partial shade areas. Aubrieta, also called Rock Cress is a low-growing flower only reaching 4 - 6 inches in height with dainty purple blooms from mid spring to early summer. This ground cover is deer resistant and perfect for rock gardens and can be used as a container plant. Approximately 2,000 heirloom Aubrieta seeds covers 40 square feet. Keep moist until germination occurs in 14 - 21 days. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soil. Aubrieta is usually resistant to deer. Trimming back after blooming tidies their appearance and encourages a thick mounding habit. Aubrieta hybrid, or commonly referred to as Rock Cress, is a wonderful, low-growing perennial ground cover that forms a mat that can spread up to 2 feet. In the spring, this Hendersonii variety is loaded with purple blooms. The flowers are dainty, 4-petaled and last into the summer. In addition to a ground cover, plant Rock Cress in containers and planters. Works well for ground cover on slopes and in rock gardens too. Aubrieta seed can be started indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seed gently into the soil but do not cover it. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 68F, germination is usually within 21 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed spacing the plants 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soil. Aubrieta is usually resistant to deer. Trimming back after blooming tidies their appearance and encourages a thick mounding habit.
