Lupines, the perfect companion Lupines are spring to early summer flowers that make a perfect partner to many other flowers. You can pair our lupine mix with other wildflowers, such as Queen of the Prairie or Asclepias. Lupines are also a nice bridge from your late-spring bloomers to early summer, starting to bloom at the same time as irises. An amazing fact about lupines? These plants actually aid nearby plants by fixing nitrogen in the soil, actually adding the nutrient to the ground. In addition to their amazing ability to naturalize, Lupines are a wonderful neighbor for other perennials of all types. When do Lupines Bloom? Lupines bloom in late spring to early summer. When planted as bareroots, in the way that we ship them, your lupines will bloom in the very first year. Lupines should be planted in late fall and allowed to overwinter in the ground. Then, they'll grow tall in spring and bloom with vigor. Lupines may also bloom again in late summer. How to care for Lupines? As cultivars of native plants, modern lupines don't require much in the way of care. They're very much like wildflowers in their drought tolerance and ability to withstand poor soil. Here are some tips for caring for your lupines:Plant lupines in a sunny area, and make sure they're given plenty of good drainage. Dry is better than wet for these plants.Water your plants regularly as they grow from the bareroots, keeping your soil evenly moist. After the plants are established, you'll only need to water during times of serious drought. You won't need to fertilize your lupines, although they won't be injured by fertilization of nearby plants. Lupines can actually absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere, meaning they don't need rich soil to grow.Deadheading your lupines can encourage a second round of blooms, especially in areas with cool summers.Allow the foliage to fall back naturally before lopping it off at the ground.Lupines won't generally need to be divided, but note that they will grow thicker each year. | Deer Resistant | Form: Perennial | Flowering Time: Late spring to early summer | Light Requirements: Full Sun | Flower Color: Mix of various color, like white, blue, pink, yellow and red | Flower Form: Flowers showy, in terminal racemes, 1-2' long, flowers are butterfly-like and about 1/2" long.
