We took it along as power for our RIB when we went for a 3 week cruise in Maine this summer. The Torqeedo worked great for 1.5 weeks. It's slow (calling it a 3hp-equivalent is probably generous) but the range is excellent. Without too much slow-pokery we were able to take 4-5 mile trips and had another 5+ miles of range available most days. It handled current and wind well enough (as long as you are not in a hurry). And it charged from the house batteries/solar panels. The motor is light, easy to use, easy to store, clean, quiet, wonderful. But half way though the trip, for no reason at all, it gave us an E45 error. The guy who spoke to us from Torqeedo customer service said it was an error with the battery/drive unit and we needed to send the motor to Connecticut for diagnosis and repair. We explained that we were unable to do that because we were off the coast of Maine and he did not seem to care at all.West Marine tried to help but was unable to arrange to get us a replacement in any reasonable length of time. When we got home the store graciously took the motor back, despite their policy to the contrary. The outboard (gas) we are currently using is at least 20 years old and will likely go another 20 with reasonable maintenance. That got me thinking that there is probably no Torqeedo in use today that will be running and reliable in another 20 years. That's a steep price to pay after already paying a steep price. We found the motor to be unreliable...fortunately, when it died we were right by the mother ship and could paddle back. Had it failed us at any one of dozens of other times earlier in the trip we would have been left in a very difficult position. The big problem with software errors is that if they don't clear when you frantically push the buttons or plug and unplug the cables, there is nothing you can do, nothing you can self-repair.
