indoors outdoors elegans full sun deer resistant wildflowers bouquets vases floral arrangementss fresh dried drying drought tolerant xeriscape xeriscaping landscape landscaping beds borders garden plant maidens showy Baby's Breath (Gypsophila elegans) is a popular annual that is adaptable and can be grown most everywhere. It is commonly called Babys Breath, and this Crimson variety has crimson-rose blooms and lance-like leaves on tall whispy stems. It is often used in floral arrangements and complements larger, showier flowers. Babys Breath is easy and fast to grow from seed. It is short-lived so many gardeners continue to sow the seed outdoors in a prepared seedbed in 3 - 4 week intervals to have a continuous supply for cutting. Seed can be started indoors 4 - 6 weeks before the end of frost season or sow seed outdoors once frost danger has passed. Press the seeds into the soil covering them with 1/16 inch of soil. Keep the seed moist until germination. With temperatures of 70F, germination is normally within 21 days. For plants grown indoors, transplant out after frost danger has passed and when there are 2 sets of true leaves. Space the plants 10 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. Gypsophila is usually resistant to deer.
