The Chaenomeles 'Texas Scarlet' - 'Texas Scarlet' Flowering Quince is a dense, broad, low growing compact deciduous flowering shrub. The branches are decorated with oval to oblong shaped leaves, sparse spiny thorns and fiery red blooms in the Spring. This is one of the first burst of colors as buds begin to bloom in early spring. Soon after, new foliage emerges a red tinted shade that later emerge to a glossy, dark green in Summer. Small yellowish-green drupes begin to appear in late Summer and can develop red tinged once matured in Autumn. Both the fruit and petals of this Quince are edible but typically used in jellies, dressings or preserves due to its acidity and bitterness. Allow 3'-5' when planting for growth.
