Helenium Hoopesii, or commonly called Orange Sneezeweed or Owls Claws, is a perennial wild flower. It reaches 28 inches tall and has bright yellowish orange, daisy-like flowers that are nearly 3 inches across. The plant forms a clump and has grayish green leaves that are lance-shaped. The blooms make excellent cut flowers, and the bloom season lasts from mid-summer to fall. Sneezeweed prefers full sun to partial shade, and it can be found growing in moist meadows and at high elevations. It likes moist but well-drained soil. In the early spring, prepare a seedbed outdoors and directly start the seed after frost danger has passed. Cover the seed very lightly, keep it moist, and with a temperature of 70F, germination usually occurs within 21 days. When the seed is started in early spring, the plant should have blooms the first year.
