Heuchera micrantha is a popular perennial that offers uniform, mounding foliage and neat stems of tiny blooms. The common name is Coral Bells, and this variety, Palace Purple, has semi-evergreen, scalloped leaves that are deep mahogany. The stems grow above the foliage and have tiny, bell-shaped, white flowers. The blooms are so delicate and lovely and make nice cut flowers! In hot climates, Heuchera performs best with afternoon shade. They also prefer regular watering, and deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. The seed needs to have a cold treatment before planting. Using a damp paper towel, place the seed on the towel and place it in a plastic container with a sealable lid. Keep the seed container in the refrigerator for 4 weeks. Start the seed indoors 6 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seeds into the soil but do not cover them. Keep them moist until germination. With temperatures of 65 70F, germination is normally within 28 days. Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Space the plants 12 inches apart. Grow in full sun to partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil. Heuchera is usually resistant to deer.
