The abutilon red tiger plant Abutilon x hybridum Red Tiger has flowers that are striped dramatically like its namesake animal. Golden-yellow flower petals with red veins the tiger stripes set this abutilon apart from other types, which have characteristic solid-colored blooms. This plant is also called flowering maple because of the foliages resemblance to maple tree Acer spp. leaves. When they receive optimal care, abutilon plants grow quickly and flower profusely. Other than its water needs, red tiger also benefits from pinching or pruning to keep the flowers blooming all season long. Pinch or prune above a node, and wipe pruners with alcohol before making each cut to keep the blades sanitized and prevent the spread of disease. Abutilons are very heat tolerant, making them excellent for summer gardens or containers in the hot sun. Provide winter protection in cooler climates. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
