These trees have several desirable qualities. They attain the first 10 to 12 feet of height quickly, and although they may eventually mature at around 30 feet, the growth begins to slow making them a very attractive and manageable choice for urban landscapes. They have natural tendency to form a dense cone shape with minimal pruning, and offer the added bonus of fragrant flowers in the summer followed by an attractive dark blue non-edible berry that is slightly smaller than an olive. The berries are not fit for human consumption, but are attractive to birds and wildlife, add texture, color and interest, but do not stain driveways and sidewalks. The leaves are large, have a dense, tight growth habit and a nice deep forest green color. Mature leaves will turn to an attractive deep rusty red before shedding. This coloration is very pretty against the other younger dark green leaves.
