Nikko Blue Hydrangea is a traditional mop-head variety that sports flowers on 'old wood' or un-pruned stems that have not died back due to Winter damage. The colour of the flower is dependent on the acidity or PH of the soil. The lower the PH or more acidic, the more blue the flower colour will be. The higher the PH or more alkaline, will determine how pink the flower will be. Adding aluminum sulfate lowers the PH and adding lime raises the PH. Nikko has a naturally rounded growth habit, and produces a lot of stems reach up to 6 ft. tall and wide. Clusters of flowers appear on the ends of the stems starting in late spring, and can bloom throughout the summer. Hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9.
