A lush semi-dwarf tropical to sub-tropical tree or shrub Bergera Curry Leaf Tree is valued for its delicious, highly aromatic leaflets, which can be snipped for cooking, and also for ornamental purposes. Add it to your edible landscape. The tree blooms sporadically during the year with clusters of fragrant white flowers, followed by small fruits that turn bluish-black when ripe. The edible fruits are peppery with a subtly sweet taste, but the seeds are toxic and should not be consumed. Used in kitchens around the world, the small, slender leaves have a strong citrus, anise, and lemongrass flavor. When cooked, the flavor becomes milder, having a slightly pungent flavor and a nutty aroma. It's a versatile plant that you can grow in the garden. In the landscape, Bergera Curry Leaf Tree can reach 6 to 15 feet tall at full maturity. If you grow it in a container, the tree will be much smaller. You can prune Bergera Curry Leaf Tree to maintain any desired size and shape. In cooler Zones, you can move your container-grown trees indoors before the first sign of frost and grow it as a houseplant during winter. Provide it with plenty of bright sunlight by placing it near a south-facing window. Bergera Curry Leaf Tree is also known as Murraya koenigii or Bergera koenigii. This small tree is a broadleaf evergreen (Zones 9-11) with a loose, upright habit of small, slender leaves that grow uniformly along the stems. It makes a beautiful accent or specimen. Bergera Curry Leaf Tree requires at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun a day and prefers temperatures between 65 and 90 F. Growing best in rich, evenly moist, well-draining loams, it should be planted in a warm, sheltered location outside and protected from frost. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out between moderate waterings. Your curry leaf tree will benefit from an application of a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season-spring and summer. The tree is self-pollinating and so will bear fruit without needing pollen from other varieties. NOTE: Do not eat the seeds. The seeds are toxic.
