CARE:Performs best in full sun or light shade in moderately fertile, evenly moist,well-drained soils.Drought tolerant once established. Cool nights are a must for best performance. TALL:Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm). TALL:Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm). ATTENTION:Despite the lemon-like smell, the plant is acrid when eaten. All parts of the plant may cause mild stomach upset if eaten, and contact with the foliage may cause phytophotodermatitis. A standout for beauty, Dictamnus albus var. purpureus (Gas Plant) is an upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial forming a bushy, upright mound of aromatic, glossy green, pinnate leaves divided into 9-11 finely toothed leaflets. The foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season and exudes a pleasant citrusy fragrance when rubbed or crushed. Blooming in late spring to early summer, erect spikes of fragrant, soft mauve-purple flowers, 1 in. long (2.5 cm), with darker veins on the petals and prominent stamens are on display. They give way to star-shaped seedpods which provide additional ornamental interest. On still days a match held below the flower spike will ignite the volatile oil contained in the seedpods resulting in a dramatic flash of light (hence the common name). Where happy, large clumps bearing magnificent displays of flowers can develop over a number of years. It feels great and presents itself in the company of many ornamental species. It is an attractive element of rural and naturalistic gardens, but not only. It can be used for urban plantings - it decorates an urban and park space in an amazingly beautiful way. Fragrant Burning Bush is quite resistant to low temperatures. Before planting dyptam, think carefully about where you want it to grow, as this shrub cannot withstand transplanting. The position should be sunny or somewhat shaded with fertile, well-drained and moderately moist, alkaline soil (this species likes soils rich in calcium). Seeds are sown under cover fairly early, usually in February or March. Young specimens are permanently planted only in September. Plants look best when planted with a spacing of 40 x 50 cm.
