Platycodon Grandiflora (Balloon Flower) is a very useful perennial in beds and borders. It has mid to dark green foliage which emerges in late spring. The foliage of Balloon Flower is not not particularly noteworthy for show; however, it holds up through the rest of the season, well after flowering. People don't buy this plant for the foliage though. It is purchased for its unique swelling buds, which give the plant its common name, and the balloon-like flowers that follow. We now offer balloon flower in blue, rose, and white which are all grown easily from flower seed. Sow seed in peat pots or cell packs, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 65 - 70 F., germination is in 21 - 30 days. Seedlings are fragile and must be handled with care. Transplant into the garden 12 - 18 inches apart. You may also sow Balloon Flower seeds directly in the garden once the soil has warmed to a workable temperature in spring. Full sun and average soil are best for balloon flower, although it will tolerate partial shade in warmer areas.
