HARDINESS ZONE.3-12 GROW.Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Provide 65-75ºF soil temperatures.Transplant after last frost, 6-12" apart. Germination: 5-10 days. WHEN TO PLANT.Late spring EDIBLE.The variety viride has leaves with the flavour of lemon thyme that can be used in salads and as a seasoning as well as to make herb teas. USE.Medicinal, attracts bees and beneficials. Ocimum gratissimum is a larger than average basil variety, hence the nickname, Tree Basil. It is also known by the name African basil. This plant is very aromatic, the oils in the leaves give off an intense clove aroma with the occasional notes of Thyme. Mature plants develop edible, white flowers that have a slightly feathery appearance and are bitter compared to the sweet and spicy leaves. A sweet clove-scented shrub whose lime-green fuzzy leaves are up to 4" long. It is widely used throughout the tropics for flavoring and medicinal purposes. It is used to treat headaches, fevers, and gastrointestinal distress. The flowers are pale yellow. An eye-catching specimen plant which is also a fine tub plant for the sun room. African basil is a full sun plant and needs sufficient sunlight during the whole growth period. It is best placed where it is exposed to sunlight for more than 6 hours average daily. However, african basil should be properly shaded in hot summers, especially the seedlings. Well-drained, fertile, loose sandy loam or humus soil is the best culture soil. African basil does not have strict requirements on soil conditions. It can be planted in both acid and alkaline soil and can tolerate pH values of 5-8, but neutral soil is the best.
