-large coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima)-U.S. native perennial flower -Size: 4-7' (flowers but plant is up to 36") tall by 36-48" wide -Site: full sun tolerates part-shade -USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-9 -To Propagate: Seed needs no special pretreatment. Large coneflower's most distinctive feature is its huge, glaucous, bluish-green leaves-up to 24" long and 10" wide! The leaves contrast well with other plants especially purple-leaves and flowers. The sturdy-steamed flowers are on stalks up to 7 tall though typically 36-48" tall. The flowers are the typical color for the genus but with very large dark brown central cones. Native to open woodlands, moist prairies, pastures, and roadways and rail tracks. In the warmest part of its range the basal leaves are evergreen. Tolerant of drought and heat and most soils preferring full sun but tolerating part-shade. It spreads slowly by rhizomes and is most often seen in the wild in colonies though it makes an excellent specimen in the garden boarder or container. Its seed head
