Friday’s report capped a week of mostly encouraging data on the job market, including an update indicating layoffs remain relatively low. Such strength helps allay one of Wall Street’s top questions: whether the job market will continue to hold up after the Federal Reserve earlier kept interest rates at a two-decade high.

The dollar jumped to a seven-week high on Friday and was on track to post its best week since September 2022 after a surprisingly strong jobs report for September led traders to cut bets that the Federal Reserve will make further 50-basis-point rate cuts.

In other dealings early Thursday, benchmark U.S. crude oil picked up 6 cents to $69.75 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the international standard, was up 14 cents at $73.04 per barrel.
