Oil futures fell sharply on Friday to post a weekly drop of about 8%, with global benchmark prices settling at their lowest since 2021, driven by worries over a slowdown in demand.

The plunge in oil prices this week is calling OPEC+’s next move into question. The OPEC cartel and its allies were planning to start increasing oil supply from October, starting with 180,000 barrels a day and gradually stepping up further.

Gasoline prices in some states have dropped below $3 a gallon and could go lower in a switch to winter blends.

Oil prices settled 2% lower on Friday, with a big weekly loss after data U.S. jobs data was weaker than expected in August, which outweighed price support from a delay to supply increases by OPEC+ producers.

Oil futures were steady early Friday as investors awaited the U.S. August jobs report, but were on track for a large weekly slide on worries over the outlook for demand.

Oil fell to the lowest price in nearly three years on Friday. Brent Crude, the international benchmark oil price, fell 2.2% to $71.07 a barrel as of Friday afternoon, according to Agence France-Presse.
