California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation on Sunday to help protect minors from harmful sexual imagery of children created through the misuse of artificial intelligence tools.

Policy experts predict other states will follow California's blueprint in passing artificial intelligence legislation.

Celebrities including Jane Fonda, Shonda Rhimes and Pedro Pascal had urged Newsom to sign it, and its lead author, State Sen. Scott Weiner, says that the bill is “a light touch, commonsense measure that codifies commitments that the largest AI companies have already voluntarily made.”
