High winds and flash flooding are expected to batter the Big Apple as the potent storm system responsible for killing six in Tennessee pushes northeast into Sunday afternoon.

NEW YORK -- Heavy rain, damaging winds and flooding are all expected across the Tri-State Area during Sunday's storm. The holiday decorations are up, but just in case they come down Sunday, Long Islanders like Ricky Caputo, who lives in Baldwin, are prepared.

There are three elements to this weather system: rain, wind, and coastal flooding. They are not equal in their impact, however. The rain is really the big issue, and some places are going to see perhaps as much as half a foot of it.

CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook reports from Queens, where flooding shut down part of the Belt Parkway overnight.

A storm system that started unleashing rain throughout the region Sunday will continue into the first part of Monday morning, leading to a wet early commute for workers and students. The heavy rain will likely taper off during the morning before colder air arrives with the afternoon clearing.
