The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed nearly 900 measles cases in the U.S. on Friday, though much of the measles cases in the country remain centered in Texas, which confirmed there have been nearly 650 cases of the highly contagious illness in the state this year.

State health officials on Friday said the number of measles cases in the state linked to a West Texas outbreak has grown to 646 since January.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed 22 more cases of measles since the last update on Tuesday. This brings the West Texas outbreak to 646 cases since it began in late January.

As more counties are being impacted by the ongoing measles outbreak and added to the growing list of counties across Texas, here's what to know.

Of those infected across the U.S., 97% of cases came from those who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

Texas public health officials on Friday reported an additional 22 measles cases in the ongoing outbreak, for a total of 646 outbreak cases. The state’s Department of State Health Services estimates that one percent of the total cases — or fewer than 10 cases — are actively infectious.
