We couldn’t prove there was a collision and she was responsible for John’s death,” juror Paula Prado said. “The Commonwealth and the investigators didn’t do their jobs to prove that to us.”

Read's lawyers say John O’Keefe was beaten, bitten by a dog, then left outside a home in Canton in a conspiracy orchestrated by the police that included planting evidence against Read.

Read was accused of hitting her boyfriend with her car and leaving him to die in a snowstorm, but alleged she was the victim of a cover-up by his fellow officers. Her 2024 trial ended in a hung jury.

The jury in Karen Read's retrial began deliberations Friday afternoon and will continue Monday. Read is facing three charges in the 2022 death of her police officer boyfriend, John O'Keefe, including second-degree murder.

The jury started to deliberate shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday and were sent home two hours later. Deliberations will resume Monday morning.
