TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Five Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack in the northern Gaza Strip, Israel’s military said Tuesday, while health officials in the Palestinian territory said 51 people were killed in Israeli strikes.

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — Israeli strikes overnight and into Tuesday killed more than 90 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip , including dozens of women and children, health officials said.

Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, the chief spokesman of the military, identified the five soldiers who were killed and said they were carrying out an attack on a Hamas brigade in the northern town of Beit Hanoun intended to take out the armed group’s positions above and below ground.
