Biden new immigration policy aims to not 'tear families apart' President Joe Biden announced a new streamlined process for certain spouses of U.S. citizens to seek permanent residents or citizenship.

A judge appointed by President-elect Donald Trump has already struck down the Biden immigration policy that sought to help US citizens' undocumented spouses.

The policy offers spouses of U.S. citizens without legal status, who meet certain criteria, a path to citizenship by applying for a green card and staying in the U.S. while undergoing the process.

The federal government says there are about 500,000 undocumented immigrants in the country are married to US citizens. A new program would give them a chance to obtain permanent legal residence.

It was expected that about 500,000 spouses of US citizens, and 50,000 non-citizen children, would benefit from the program, which has now been deemed illegal.

A federal judge on Thursday struck down the Biden administration’s “parole in place” policy that gave legal status to certain undocumented individuals who are married to US citizens.
