Two Southern Illinois University students from the Chicago suburbs died Monday morning in a truck crash downstate, Carbondale police said.

DUPO, Ill. – A pedestrian was killed in a crash Wednesday morning near Dupo, Illinois, according to Illinois State Police. The crash happened just after 10 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 255. It happened around milepost 6 in Monroe County.

Francis Martinez, 18, of Des Plaines, and Wolfgang Gustaveson, 19, of Park Ridge, were killed when their truck collided with another truck, Carbondale police said.

The driver behind the wheel in a deadly crash in downtown Chicago was an off-duty Chicago police officer, law enforcement sources told CBS 2.The officer has now been relieved of her duties.CBS 2 Investigator Megan Hickey reported that the officer was on her cell phone at the time of the crash.

A man was pronounced dead after a vehicle accident overnight in the Hermosa neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Chicago police said. Shortly after 2 a.m., officers responded to an accident in the 4500 block of West Fullerton Avenue and found a silver SUV struck several poles before coming to a stop.
