Friday will be the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, essentially kicking off the summer season.

This year, astronomical summer officially starts on Saturday, June 21, and will end on Monday, September 22. The start of the sunny season is officially marked by the summer solstice, otherwise known as the longest day of the year, meaning it is the one day that has the most hours of sunlight.

The day marks the longest period of sunlight and the shortest night of the calendar year, with each day becoming a little shorter as we head into the fall and winter months in the northern hemisphere,

At that point the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer, and summer officially begins. Is it always on the same date? No. The date can be June 20, 21 or 22. This year, the solstice is on June 20 for almost all of America and June 21 for most of the rest of the world.
