Russia saw the effects of its war on Ukraine dramatically reverberate back onto its own territory on Wednesday, after a “massive” shelling attack injured four people in Belgorod and preliminary information indicated a drone crashed and sparked a fire at an oil refinery further south.

The Russian leader has been left with few options to retaliate for devastating drone strikes on Moscow as his military more broadly reels in its war against Ukraine.

The drone attack in Moscow did little damage to the city, but it brought the war in Ukraine to Russian land, leaving officials and civilians stunned.

The Kremlin’s war is no longer a distant concern for many Russians.For more than 15 months, the fighting has been focused on the battlefields and battered cities of Ukraine, while life continued largely as normal for millions across the border.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said work needs to be done to "beef up" air defenses, after Tuesday's drone attack on Moscow.
