This newer variety of crape myrtle produces the sweetest watermelon-red blooms starting in midsummer--the perfect way to enjoy the second half of the best season. The really exciting thing about the Northern Belle series is that these crape myrtle shrubs will perform in colder zones than this southern beauty ever could before. They'll even rebloom reliably! In a trial garden in zone 6, it was left without winter coverage and still performed beautifully the next summer. The only difference in its performance in cooler and warmer climates is in how tall it will get. In cold zones, it'll die back to the ground in winter and jump up new in summer, staying at a compact 3' tall. Especially in zone 5, you should give it a heaping layer of mulch to protect through winter. In frost-free climates, it'll stay around all year, so it'll grow to about 4.5-5' tall.
