Growing to 6 to 12 feet tall, Rouge Cardinal Clematis was born to climb and develops sumptuous red flowers 4 - 6 inches across on a framework of green foliage. It blooms from early summer until the fall. A vigorous clematis, Rouge Cardinal Clematis is ideal for growing up a pergola, obelisk or trellis. It is cold hardy and suitable for growing in zones 4 to 11. It can also be grown through a host tree. This perennial vine often attracts hummingbirds when in bloom.Rouge Cardinal Clematis CareThe Rouge Cardinal Clematis grows happily in full sun to partial shade. For best performance, plant it in fertile, moist and free-draining soil. Water well on planting and until established. Once mature, irrigate during dry spells to keep the soil moist. Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in the spring. Keep the roots cool by shading them with other plants. Hard prune all stems back to 1 foot in early spring, cutting just above a visible pair of buds. Provide support and tie in as necessary.Rouge Cardinal Clematis SpacingAs a vigorous climber, the Rouge Cardinal Clematis can reach 6 to 12 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.
