Walmart Inc. asked a federal court to allow it to end its credit-card partnership with Capital One Financial Corp., saying the bank has failed to meet critical standards for customer care.

A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that Walmart can end its credit card partnership with Capital One early because the bank failed to provide the required level of customer service.

Capital One and Walmart announced the end of their exclusive consumer credit card partnership that began in 2019, though cardholders can continue to use their cards and earn rewards.

Capital One may lose a credit card contract worth more than $1 billion if a lawsuit filed against it last week in the Southern District Court of New York is successful.

The companies said card-holders can still use their Capital One Walmart Rewards cards, which will continue to accrue rewards unless customers are notified of a change.

Walmart settled its lawsuit against Capital One over their credit card partnership, which had made Capital One the exclusive issuer of Walmart-branded consumer credit cards before ending last month.

Walmart succeeded in litigation regarding the relationship in March this year. While Capital One and Walmart have ended their card partnership, nothing changes for cardholders.
