The multi-billion-dollar payment is meant to resolve claims that the drugmaker's pain medication, OxyContin, caused an opioid crisis.

Fifty-five state attorneys general have agreed to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family over their role in fueling the opioid crisis.

"For years, the Sackler family profited off other people's pain – destroying lives and families in Georgia and throughout the country," Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said in announcing the decision to join the settlement.
