Pope Francis died of a stroke followed by a coma and heart failure on Monday morning, the Vatican’s press office said in a statement. The pope has also suffered a “previous episode of acute respiratory failure”, arterial hypertension and type II diabetes, the statement said.

Pope Francis, 88, died weeks after he was discharged from the hospital following a lengthy battle with double pneumonia and other health issues.
