Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat issued a statement Monday before being sworn into office for a second term, addressing November's DOJ report which detailed deplorable conditions at the Fulton County Jail.

County commissioners scrapped a plan to build a new jail. Instead, they’ll spend a fraction of the cost to renovate the current jail.

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office said many of the conditions outlined in the feds' report are exacerbated by the building's decline.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office issued a formal statement responding to a scathing report from the Justice Department about conditions at the Fulton County jail. The response says the federal report underscores “deep challenges facing our correctional system.”
