Five state lawmakers who were denied access to a new immigration detention center built by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration in the Florida Everglades have sued the governor, arguing that he overstepped his authority in blocking legislative oversight of the facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz.

The groups sued federal, state and Miami-Dade County officials over the facility, which could start housing migrants next week.

Several immigrant detainees described high tension and anxiety at the remote, hastily constructed facility over a lack of information, recreation and access to medication.

The Florida Supreme Court sent another lawsuit from Democratic state lawmakers to the circuit court in Leon County. The lawmakers sued after they were denied entry to the facility on July 3. No hearings have been held or scheduled yet.

Without permanent structures, electricity or running water, logistical headaches have emerged at “Alligator Alcatraz.”

But data and news reports about the first month’s arrivals show the majority of Alligator Alcatraz’s detainees do not have U.S. criminal convictions.  President Donald Trump, federal officials and Florida Republicans touted the remote Everglades immigration detention centers — dubbed Alligator Alcatraz — as a place to detain people deemed the "worst of the worst.
