The UN's health agency on Thursday declared an end to a nearly four-month epidemic of Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea, saying the disease, a cousin of Ebola, had caused 35 confirmed or suspected deaths.

The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced the end of Equatorial Guinea's first Marburg virus disease outbreak, after two incubation periods passed with no new cases since the last patient was discharged from treatment.

The outbreak was declared on Feb. 13 and was the first of its kind in Equatorial Guinea. The announcement of end of the outbreak in Equatorial Guinea follows a similar move by Tanzania last week. Marburg virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people,
