Big Lots Reopening More Than 70 Stores After Bankruptcy
In September 2024, Big Lots filed for bankruptcy and announced it would close all of its locations by the end of the year. However, Variety Wholesalers agreed to buy more than 200 Big Lots locations during a liquidation sale with the plan to relaunch the struggling retailer.

Retail store Big Lots has announced it will reopen several stores across the United States in two phases throughout May 2025.

None of the multiple former Big Lots stores were announced to reopen in the immediate Lehigh Valley. The one at 7150 Hamilton Blvd. in Upper Macungie Township will become an Ocean State Job Lot this summer.
Grocery store chain purchases 3 former Big Lots stores
Grocery store chain, Aldi was also one of the retailers that purchased the former Big Lot stores. Aldi purchased three stores, according to bankruptcy filings. None of the stores are in Pennsylvania. The three stores are located at: Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, and began closing most of its stores in December.
Some local Big Lots stores reopen under new ownership
The Boardman and Warren locations are reopening on Thursday. The New Castle store will reopen on May 15. The stores closed in January after Big Lots filed for bankruptcy. The new owners believe they can turn the stores around, and they are planning to reopen 132 locations.
