Civil rights groups insisted that the Supreme Court take up Louisiana’s redistricting battle on Wednesday in an attempt to maintain a second majority-black congressional district that was recently drawn.

Voting rights advocates have filed an emergency motion asking the Supreme Court to keep in place a new Louisiana congressional map that gives the state a second majority Black district.

Civil rights groups urged the US Supreme Court to step into Louisiana’s fraught and potentially far-reaching redistricting battle on Wednesday, asking the justices to rule against some White voters who claim the state legislature violated the Constitution when it drew a second majority-Black district in its congressional map.

Black voters and civil rights groups challenged that version of the map and won a court ruling that it likely violated the VRA and should be redrawn. But the Supreme Court paused the redrawing process for the 2022 election and while it considered a similar case from Alabama.
