In a rare apology to the United Nations, Israel said its forces had struck a U.N. compound in Gaza with tank fire. A Bulgarian aid worker was killed.

The admission confirmed Post reporting that the blasts were caused by Israeli tank shells. The Israeli military previously denied its troops were involved.

Israel had previously denied its troops were responsible for the killing of a UN worker with tank fire on 19 March.

It was the second time in a week that Israel’s military, after an internal investigation, reversed an initial denial of its role in a deadly incident.

The Israeli military acknowledged on Thursday that it was responsible for killing a United Nations aid worker in a strike on a UN guesthouse in Gaza last month, backtracking on its previous denials in the face of mounting public evidence of Israeli responsibility.

The Israeli military launched a campaign to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. More than 51,300 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's health ministry.
